Aging can be scary. But what many people do not realize is that it also often brings greater happiness and overall satisfaction.

While the average adult age is filled with the many responsibilities of careers and family, adulthood often offers greater freedom from these burdens. In fact, many studies have shown that people tend to be happier as they mature beyond middle age. For example, a study conducted by researchers Mariana and James studied the happiness of people in 72 countries. They discovered that in most countries, people are less happy during the past 40 years, but often experience much more happiness and satisfaction in life in subsequent years.

When people no longer have so many daily responsibilities, they can take life at a slower pace. They can think more about their lives and with more perspective, which is something that can also arise naturally with age. As a result, as you get older, it is easier to be clear about your priorities and invest your time and attention in the things that interest you most. Living more in line with their true priorities, seniors often experience a sense of well-being.

You may worry less about the judgment of others, feel better about yourself, and have less disturbing and more satisfying relationships.

As you get older, you can also find yourself measuring your life for the amount of time you have left, which can motivate you to find a way to make peace with your life. If you take good care of your body and mind as you progress through your golden years, you are more likely to flourish physically, emotionally and socially. Much of this comes down to maintaining a healthy lifestyle: exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet and maintaining an active and emotionally supportive social life. It is also important to keep your mind sharp as you read, learn new things and stay intellectually involved in the world around you. And if you also strive to cultivate a positive attitude, you will have a winning combination.

Of course, not everyone becomes happier as they get older. Some people are overcome by the many tensions and struggles of aging. Others simply mature from unhappy youngsters to older unhappy ones. Even so, aging can have its benefits. And if you focus on the positive aspects, you give yourself a better chance to be happy and satisfied as you move towards what, hopefully, will be your golden years.
